Today’s Distracting World

Are you like me?  Are you a “Martha” trying to become more like “Mary?”

Today, it’s really easy to become like Martha in that famous Bible story in the book of Luke.  It’s easy to rationalize being really busy, to take on unnecessary stress or fear, to get so caught up in and carried away with the “day-to-day” that I become more and more distracted and distant from the peace and order sitting at Jesus’ feet gives me.  Thankfully, Jesus reminds me of my need for Him and brings me back into close fellowship with Him like Mary in that same Bible story.  Jesus is what’s needful.  There’s nothing like dwelling with Him.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.  She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.  Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.  She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself?  Tell her to help me!”  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42
